History of Affton MO

Part of the Louisiana Purchase, Affton became more widely settled in 1842 when successful fur trader Kenneth MacKenzie, divided his land into 40 acre tracts and listed them for sale. During this time, many German immigrants came to live in the area as a result of the high level of political disturbance in Germany from 1835 to 1870.

The Affton MO school district includes five separate schools divided by age group, ranging from Pre-K to high school level education. Based on statewide data, Affton schools are ranked in the top 20th percentile for educational centers in Missouri. Average enrollment at Affton High School is approximately 850 students. Some places of interest near Affton MO are the Oakland House, Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site and Grant's Farm.  Oakland House is the restored historic home of Louis A. Benoist, one of St. Louis' first bankers. Constructed from limestone quarried on site and designed by famous architect George I. Barnett, Oakland House is on the National Register of Historic Places.  The Ulysses S. Grant Historic Site was established in 1990 to preserve the farm owned by President Grant and his wife, Julia Dent Grant.  The grounds include the house in which the president lived as well as other structures that have been restored to their 19th century appearance.
