Part of the Louisiana Purchase, Affton became more widely settled in 1842 when successful fur trader Kenneth MacKenzie, divided his land into 40 acre tracts and listed them for sale. During this time, many German immigrants came to live in the area as a result of the high level of political disturbance in Germany from 1835 to 1870.
