History of Defiance

Around the turn of the century, the little town of Defiance, MO was formed. This area had no name but big plans, as the Katy Railroad began installing a rail system through this region. The unnamed town needed a title with its progress and plans for further development.  Town officials wanted to use the name Parsons, after the man who laid the railroad. The name was quickly turned down due to another town on the Katy Line with the same label.  The Matson Brothers tried to stop the progress in this town, and thus the town was named “Defiance” because they defied the Matson’s and allowed progress to continue.
